Distribution of Watermelon Mosaic Viruses 1 and 2 in Florida
نویسنده
چکیده
Watermelon mosaic viruses 1 and 2 (WMV-1 and WMV-2) have both been collected in south and central Florida, but WMV-1 has been most prevalent in the southern and WMV-2 in the central counties. All WMV infections sampled from 1964 to 1969 in Collier and Hendry coun ties of south Florida were caused by WMV-1. Melothria pendula L., a native perennial cucurbitaceous weed, was found to be an over wintering host of WMV-1 in central and south Florida in 1969. It was an important source of Florida Agricultural Experiment Stations Journal Series No. 3408. WMV-1 in south Florida where plants were often extensively infected; it was growing much earlier than spring watermelon crops, and be fore spring aphid flights; and it was often con centrated near the crops by cultural operations. In central Florida M. pendula plants, although often extensively infected, emerged too late in the spring, and were usually found too far from crops to be an important source of virus for watermelon. Many M. pendula plants were found in north Florida, but few were infected. Infection with WMV-2 in central Florida was found in the ornamental hibiscus, Hibiscus rosasinensis L., which might be an important over wintering host of this virus. Annual plants found naturally infected with WMV-2 were: citron, Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Mansf.; showy crotalaria, Crotalaria spectabilis Roth; hairy indigo, Indigofera hirsuta L.; and oneleaf clover, Alysicarpus vaginalis DC. 162 FLORIDA STATE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY, 1969

Viruses are the most common causes of diseases affecting cucurbits in New York. These diseases result in losses through reduction in growth and yield and are responsible for distortion and mottling of fruit , making the product unmarketable. A complex of viruses is able to infect cucurbits, a plant group that includes cucumber , melon , squash, pumpkins , and watermelon. The most important viru...

A variety of fresh market vegetables, including watermelon and tomato are economically important crops in Florida. Whitefly-transmitted Squash vein yellowing virus (SqVYV) was first identified in squash and watermelon in Florida in 2005 and shown to cause a severe decline of watermelon vines as crops approach harvest. Florida is most economically impacted by SqVYV, although the virus has been d...
